Some thoughts on Baillot and the French and Franco-Belgium Schools of Violin Playing

For my own personal reference, I am constructing a "violin tree" with Corelli and Vivaldi at the top.

Italian School
Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
|
Giovanni Battista Somis (1686-1763)
|
                            Gaetano Pugnani (1731-1798)
|
Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824) [Noteworthy contribution: Use of Tourte bow for new techniques]

  • Viotti transferred the Italian tradition of violin playing to Paris.  His students included members of the French Triumvirate (Kreutzer, Rode, and Baillot) and the founder of the Franco-Belgium School, Robberechts.

French School
  • Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831) [Notable for "42 Etudes and Caprices;" Beethoven devoted his Violin Sonata No. 9 in A Major to him, although they were only acquaintances]
  • Pierre Rode (1774-1830) [Composed "24 Caprices;" 13 violin concertos]
  • Pierre Baillot (1771-1842) [Author of "The Art of the Violin" treatise on violin playing]
  • Louis Spohr (1784-1859)

        Franco-Belgium School
   Robberechts
|
Charles de Bériot (1802-1870)
|
Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1866)
|
               Eugéne Ysaÿe (1858-1931)
